La Union — "Elyu" to regulars — is the laid-back surf capital of northern Luzon, an easy weekend escape from Manila built around mellow waves, beach bars and a growing creative scene. Beginners learn to surf on the gentle breaks of San Juan, while the rest of the day is for sunset swims, art cafes, and slow mornings by the sea.
Surf season runs roughly October to March when the swells are best; the summer months are calmer and better for swimming and learning, with warm, sunny weather.
It is a 4–6 hour drive or bus ride from Manila. Tricycles and rented scooters get you between San Juan's beaches, cafes and surf spots.
Come on a weekday for uncrowded line-ups and cheaper stays; if you are brand new to surfing, the San Juan beach break is one of the friendliest places in the country to start.
