Vigan is a beautifully preserved slice of Spanish-colonial Asia — a UNESCO World Heritage city where cobblestone Calle Crisologo is lined with centuries-old ancestral houses, and horse-drawn kalesas still clip-clop past. Beyond the heritage streets are pottery workshops, empanada stalls and a rich Ilocano food culture that make it one of the country's most atmospheric towns.
The cooler, drier months of November to February are most comfortable for walking the heritage streets; summer (March to May) is hot, while the wet season brings humid afternoons.
The heritage core is compact and best explored on foot or by kalesa. Fly into Laoag (LAO) and drive about an hour, or take an overnight bus from Manila.
Calle Crisologo is at its most magical early in the morning and after dark once the lanterns glow and the day-trippers leave — stay overnight to have it nearly to yourself.
